Program for Final Project

IN5409 History of Interior Architecture

Final Project: Reproduction of Historic Exemplar

After students have been through the historical study of various periods in interior architecture, it is necessary that students demonstrate their understanding and skills in design application of historic styles. This must be achieved through further research of selected historic period and providing of an exemplar that contains ornaments, decorative motifs, stylistic features and exquisite details that can reflect the particular style. The requirements for the project are as follows:

Project Requirements
In a group of 5, students must select a building type from the following list:
• Roman Domus
• Medieval House
• Italian Renaissance Palazzo
• French Renaissance Hotel
• French Rococo Hotel

In each building type, students then select an exemplar that can reflect the style.
For example:

Building Type: Roman Domus
Exemplar: Domus Aurea, Rome, built between A.D. 64 and 68

Further research is then carried out in order to obtain information regarding spatial characteristics, wall treatments, ceiling treatment, floor treatments, and furniture of the selected exemplar. Each student must be responsible for one of the aforementioned interior elements. In the final solution, as a group work, students must assemble all interior elements into a 3 dimensional computer generated spatial model that clearly illustrate the exemplar.

Work Requirement
1. Drawings of Plan (scale 1:75), Elevations (scale 1:20), Floor Patterns (scale 1:75), Ceiling Plan (scale 1:75), and Furniture (Isometric or perspective) neatly mounted on A2 board
2. At least 3 perspectives of the exemplar each mounted on A2 board
3. A copy of computer generated model file on CD

Project Schedule
August 27th : Group assigning/Selection of building type
September 3rd : Exemplar identification/ Presentation of stylistic research
notes and sketches of each interior element
(work should be 60% completed)
September 22nd : Submission of final works at 9.00-12.00 hrs

French Renaissance and Later Development

Italian renaissance 1460-1600

In the 15th century, while most countries in the west adopted the Early Christian, Romanesque, and Gothic style, Italians were thinking differently.  In the gloom of middle age interiors, artists craved lights and an alternative kind of aesthetic.  With the new discovery of Vitruvius’s famous treaties on architecture, classical style was once more reexamined by scholars.  At the time, for someone to be considered a “gentleman” he must possess knowledge of the classical world be it arts, architecture, or philosophy.

The Gothic 1132-c. 1500

The term Gothic was coined in Italy in the 15th century referring to the barbaric tribe the “Goths” who destroy much of classical architecture admired by Italians in Renaissance period.  However scholars of the 19th century Gothic Revival had different opinion about the Goths.
